There was a time when treatments for illness and disease could be published for the public’s benefit. Sometimes the treatments were valid and worked well, and sometimes they were not so successful. Today it is against the law to promote anything as a treatment that has not been tested and approved as a drug.

This is unfortunate because there are many effective and inexpensive remedies that could be made available to help people, remedies that are totally safe with no side effects. The following treatment is one I have tested in my family and have found to be very effective for treatment of the common cold. I haven’t had the need to test it on the flu bug yet.

In 1924 a booklet was published by the Arm & Hammer Soda Company called “Arm & Hammer Baking Soda Medicinal Uses”, by Dr. Volney S. Cheney. In it Dr. Cheney explains how he had great success treating patients with the following protocol:

“In 1918 and 1919 while fighting the ‘flu’ with the U.S. Public Health Service it was brought to my attention that rarely anyone who had been thoroughly alkalinized with bicarbonate of soda contracted the disease, and those who did contract it, if alkalinized early, would invariably have mild attacks. I have since that time treated all cases of ‘Cold’, ‘Influenza’ and ‘LaGripe’ by first giving generous doses of bicarbonate of soda, and in many, many instances within 36 hours the symptoms would have entirely abated. Further, within my own household, before Woman’s Clubs and Parent-Teachers’ Associations, I have advocated the use of bicarbonate of soda as a preventive for ‘Colds’, with the result that now many reports are coming in stating that those who took ‘Soda’ were not affected, while nearly everyone around them had the ‘flu’.”

The recommended dosages from the Arm & Hammer Company for colds and Influenza were to administer the following on an empty stomach:

  • Day 1- take six doses (½ tsp) of Arm & Hammer Bicarbonate of Soda in a glass of cool water, at about 2 hour intervals.
  • Day 2- take four doses (½ tsp) of Arm & Hammer Bicarbonate of Soda in a glass of cool water, at the same intervals.
  • Day 3- take two doses (½ tsp) of Arm & Hammer Bicarbonate of Soda in a glass of cool water morning and evening.
  • Thereafter- take (½ tsp) of Arm & Hammer Bicarbonate of Soda in a glass of cool water each morning until the cold is cured.
  • After each dose remember to refrain from eating for one hour.

So, why does this treatment work? The answer is simple: viruses cannot live in an alkaline state, and alkalizing the body is the result of this protocol. Alkalize the body, kill the virus, and cure the cold!
